Guide to Selecting a Safe and Comfortable Baby Crib
The baby crib provides your newborn with their primary sleep environment, offering a safer alternative to bassinets or bedside sleepers. When choosing a crib, ensure it is JPMA-certified to meet safety standards. Our comprehensive guide will help you pick a model that keeps your baby secure and comfortable.
Simplify the design:
Opt for a plain crib without decorative finials or scrollwork, as these features can cause clothing to catch and pose safety risks. Drop-side cribs are banned by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission due to safety concerns.
For optimal safety, select a basic crib that adheres to current standards, ensuring strong slats, a sturdy frame, and proper mattress support.
Prioritize safety:
Avoid used cribs older than ten years as they may not comply with today’s safety laws. Confirm slat spacing does not exceed 2 3/8 inches, and check for sharp edges, loose screws, or protruding parts to prevent injury.
Choose a firm mattress:
Press the mattress to test firmness; it should quickly rebound. Soft mattresses increase the risk of SIDS. Federal guidelines specify full-sized crib mattresses should measure 27 ¼ inches by 51 5/8 inches and be no more than 6 inches thick. Ensure it fits tightly and use fitted sheets to reduce suffocation risks. Keep plush toys or bumper pads out of the crib, as they can cause suffocation.
Safety tips to keep in mind:
Place your baby on their back to sleep.
Confirm the crib hasn't been recalled.
Regularly tighten screws and hardware.
Remove mobiles once your child can push or climb.
Keep the crib away from windows, cords, curtains, and sharp objects.
Keep monitor cords out of reach.
Discontinue use as soon as your baby attempts to climb out.
