Sometimes, minerals accumulate to create small crystals that join together into larger stones called kidney stones. Several treatment options exist to remove these stones, particularly when they are small enough to be broken down or dissolved with medication.
The endoscopic approach for treating kidney stones is known as ureteroscopy. This procedure typically takes about an hour and can be done under general or spinal anesthesia. A small X-ray helps guide a slender instrument called a cystoscope through the urethra to inspect the bladder.
The cystoscope allows for bladder examination and helps direct a thin wire into the bladder. Afterward, a ureteroscope—an advanced endoscopic device—is inserted toward the kidney stones. Depending on the case, the ureteroscope may remove the stone or employ a tiny laser to disintegrate it into fragments that are naturally expelled. A temporary catheter is usually placed afterward to facilitate urine flow.
Recovery and Aftercare
Patients are observed in the recovery area until they can urinate normally, often for at least a day.
Driving is typically discouraged immediately post-surgery; arranging alternate transportation is advised. Pain relievers will be prescribed for discomfort management.
Initial stinging during urination might occur, but increasing fluid intake helps clear residual stone debris.
Most individuals can return to their regular activities within 2-3 days, but should monitor for any complications like urethral injury or obstruction.
