Antiviral medications can cut short the illness if taken within the first two days. Proper care reduces the chances of serious complications such as pneumonia. Annual flu vaccination remains the most effective preventive strategy.

The key flu vaccine is known as the Quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine, marketed as Fluarix Tetra.

This vaccine includes antigens for four flu virus strains:

A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus

A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus

B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus

Each 0.5 ml dose contains 15 micrograms of hemagglutinin from each strain, aimed at preventing infections caused by these four viruses.

The vaccine stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the hemagglutinin proteins on the viral surface. These antibodies then neutralize the viruses, providing immunity. It is recommended to get vaccinated annually, ideally before the flu season starts in October. Suitable for individuals aged 3 and above, with additional doses for unvaccinated children between 3 and 9 years old.
