A New Masterpiece on Wheels

Julie Mehretu, the celebrated Ethiopian American abstract painter, has unveiled her creation for the 20th BMW Art Car. Her canvas: the BMW M Hybrid V8, a plug-in hybrid endurance racer developed with Dallara. The car's bold livery, derived from Mehretu's painting "Everywhen," features sweeping washes of color and black streaks that seem to flow across the body, capturing the essence of speed. The grand reveal took place at the Pompidou Center in Paris, and the car is set to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Fifty Years of Art on Race Cars

The BMW Art Car project began in 1975 when French racing driver Hervé Poulain asked American sculptor Alexander Calder to paint his BMW 3.0 CSL. Since then, a roster of iconic artists—Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Jenny Holzer, and now Mehretu—have turned racing machines into rolling artworks. Each car combines high-performance engineering with personal artistic vision, creating a unique legacy that bridges motorsport and contemporary art.

From Canvas to Carbon Fiber

Mehretu's process started with studying the M Hybrid V8's low, wide shape and massive rear wing. She envisioned her painting "Everywhen" as if it were passing through the car, with colors and lines extending onto the body. Working closely with BMW engineers, she adapted the artwork to the car's contours without compromising aerodynamics. Advanced techniques replicated the texture and vibrancy of her original canvas, resulting in a seamless blend of art and machine.

An Artist of Global Themes

Born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mehretu moved to the US at age seven and later earned an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work frequently explores migration, colonialism, and globalization, using layered lines and shapes inspired by technical drawings and urban plans. She has received a MacArthur Fellowship and a US Department of State Medal of Arts Award. Her Art Car continues this narrative, reaching a broader audience through the world of motorsport.
